Title Tag & Meta-Tags

Much in the same way a title of book sets the tone for the subject covered, the Title Tag sets the tone of a web-page. It is the first thing a crawler reads as it crawls onto the page. Without a Title Tag on a web-page it becomes like an untitled book that gets indexed in the Untitled Book section. In that regard, the Yahoo! Search index currently has over 20 million entries actually indexed as “Untitled Document.” Worse yet, there are 30 million websites indexed in Yahoo! that have as their Title a salutation like “Welcome to….”. Hence, they get indexed as such. The same goes for the 15 million websites that have “Home Page” as their Title tag.

What should a Title Tag consist of? It should consist of three different key-phrases related to that specific page. It is also advisable that each of those three key-phrases be made up of three words each. In short, these key-phrases are your keywords for the website. Moreover, each important page on a website should have a different Title-Tag otherwise the crawlers will compute that each page on the website is basically the same.

It is also important to keep the character count for the Title Tag (including spaces) to under a 68 count in order to avoid dilution in the tag itself. Also, you’ll want to put your most important key-phrase as the first key-phase in the Title Tag as it will be the first words crawled.

In relation to the meta-tag content description, you’ll want to take your Title-tag and be a little creative. I usually advise my clients to make a wordy two sentence description of their web-page with the Title Tag key-phrases intermingled within it. The meta-tag description from a crawlers perspective carries less weight than the Title-Tag and is more meant for human eyes (though not entirely). On the meta-keywords, modern SEO’s are now skipping over even messing with them as they seem to have no value, opting instead for onsite key-phrasing.
