Onsite Optimization in the Persuit of a Search Engine Friendly Website

Onsite optimization is taking each important page on your website and tailoring it to go with the grain of search. From a crawler’s perspective, it is looking for content that reasonably aligns with your underlining properties (e.g. title/meta tags & URL), page content, and any incoming anchor texts that may exist.

I say “reasonably” because search technology has developed to the point where it can detect a website trying too hard to rank by over stuffing keyword phrasings. The content of your web-page should flow in a dynamic that has primarily human readership at the fore front. With that in mind, you’ll want to lightly sprinkle key-phrases on your web-page with the most important key-phrase toward the upper portion of the page.

Linking strategies within your site from page to page are also very important. Much like the concept of external anchor texting, the words that you choose are your keywords for that landing-page and the crawler is going to expect relative content upon entry. Many webmasters make the mistake of hyper-linking the phrase “Click Here” which does nothing to aid the crawler. In short, every hyper-link in your website should be a descriptive short phrase. I say short because too many hyper-link words in one link can dilute the whole process of helping the crawler understand what it is about to enter.
